Low-Cost Spay/Neuter and Animal Welfare Center

Nearly 12,000 unwanted dogs and cats were euthanized in Indianapolis last year.

Adoption plays a critical role in reducing the number of euthanized animals each year, but it's impossible to reduce the number of homeless animals simply through adoption only. Spay/neuter services help substantially. According to American Humane, only 1/4 of dogs and cats that enter shelters are adopted (though at the Humane Society of Indianapolis, we don't euthanize for space, and the number of animals leaving our shelter alive is closer to 9/10). An important strategy to reduce the number of unwanted and abandoned companion animals ending up in shelters and risking death in Marion County is the creation of a robust, targeted, community-based spay/neuter program for low-income pet owners and underserved populations.

The Humane Society of Indianapolis will soon establish the first collaborative low-cost spay/neuter and animal welfare center in Indianapolis. The center will offer low-cost spay/neuter and vaccinations to pets of families in need, TNR assistance and medical care for feral cats, community resources, and more. We plan to sterilize 5,000 cats and dogs in the first year and ramp up to 10,000 - 12,000 within three years.
